On the first day of San Diego Comic-Con 2018, Funimation debuted the official trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Broly, which re-imagines the meeting between Broly, the legendary super saiyan, and Goku.
Fans of the franchise first saw Broly in the Dragon Ball Z movie, The Legendary Super Saiyan, but up until this point, his character was not cannon. With the upcoming movie, Broly will officially become part of the Dragon Ball Super storyline.
Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama revealed that he wanted the new movie to center around Broly because the character is a fan-favorite not only in Japan, but also overseas. Additionally, because Toriyama had “practically no involvement with the anime [movie] at the time” besides the designs, he wanted to try working his own “hand at a story that incorporates him [Broly] into the Dragon Ball Super series.”

The creator added that because Broly is so loved among fans, he made sure to keep the character’s “classic image” when writing the story for the new movie. As the trailer shows, Broly’s character design is not only reminiscent of the original 90s character, but the animation of the classic Dragon Ball Z movies themselves.
