Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’ Neal are two of the most talented and most decorated stars of the yesteryear in the NBA. The two stars have played for decades in the NBA for 5+ franchises bringing home the coveted NBA championships at least twice. The two played against each other on multiple occasions until 1997 when Smith retired from professional basketball.
Having never played in the same team, the two became the unlikeliest of friends and today share a bond equivalent to ‘brothers. In a recent Podcast with TNT, Shaq was joined by Kenny Smith who recounts the days when he first played with Shaq and nearly called cops on him days later.
Kenny Smith recounts on how he and Shaquille O’Neal have seen almost everything and anything together. He adds,“From family to friends, we’ve been, we’ve seen births of babies, we’ve seen marriages we’ve seen everything happen in our life. There’s nothing that’s happened in my life that this dude doesn’t know I haven’t seen or don’t know an intricate part of and vice versa. I mean it’s unbelievable so that’s probably why it’s like I everything about my life, he knows everything. There’s nothing he doesn’t know.”
How Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith became ‘Brothers’
Kenny Smith cherishes the day how he and NBA Hall of Famer became ‘brothers,’ he adds, “Okay you know because when you’re with your brother you have no shame whatsoever. So, it’s after a show one day and we were you know it started like gelling and getting closer we always with cousins from through basketball. But then he just calls me and it’s after the show. Shaq is great at working out after the show he and I are probably the only two that really kind of take it seriously… uh you know keeping our health conscious.“
“So he’s like Kenny come here for a second could you just grab this for me. I’m in there working out and I’m like okay no problem. I come into the room and he’s on the exercise bike which is not unusual unless you’re butt naked except for your underwear he’s just got underwear and I’m like, ‘oh he really so comfortable around me.’ He’s like, ‘Yo can you grab that water for me man appreciate it.’ I mean it didn’t even flinch I was like he is truly my brother he does not care about anything.“
Kenny Smith Called Cops on Shaq
During the podcast Shaq reminds him of the bizarre incident when Kenny called the cops on him. Kenny continues, “So now, this is early in our relationship, So Tierra his daughter and my son went to the same elementary school. No, actually pre-elementary whatever that is… Kindergarten. I come in you know we pick up the kids, I didn’t know Shaq really I just played against him. I didn’t really know him. I come to school picking up my son and, ‘I’m like where’s my son?’“
“Think about this, this is 2000 before you know like the whole kidnapping stuff, they go he’s with Shaq and I’m like why Shaq? I don’t even have is number and I’m obviously shocked and I say ma’am you gave my son to Shaq? Finally, after making lots of calls, I was able to get a hold of him and I ask him, ‘Shaq you got my son?’ He’s like Yeah, he wanted to come with me I took him to get a haircut. I was trying to make sense of it he takes my son and then gives him a haircut, who does this? And I thought to myself should I call the cops?”
Incidents like these made them brothers they are today; They continue to hold on to these fun memories and pull each other’s leg whenever they get the opportunity.
