Born on December 31, 1941, in Glasgow’s Govan neighborhood, Alexander Chapman Ferguson was the son of Elizabeth and Alexander Beaton Ferguson. His grandmother lived on Shieldhall Road.
His father was employed by a shipyard as a plater’s helper. The tenement at 667 Govan Road, where he grew up with his parents and younger brother Martin, who also became a football star, has since been demolished.
Alex Ferguson attended Broomloan Road Primary School before moving on to Govan High School.
He began playing football at the Govan organization Harmony Row Boys Club. Later, he transferred to Drumchapel Amateurs, a youthful squad that had a strong reputation for producing senior football players.
